The iPhone 17, iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro
### Intro This years September keynote brought a fresh perspective to the iPhone lineup, redefining how we think about everyday devices. With the introduction of the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro, Apple now embraces a three-tier strategy that caters to different lifestyles and priorities. In this episode, I dive into what makes each model distinct, why Apple’s subtle design and feature choices matter, and the small but meaningful surprises that caught my attention during the event. From improved battery life and display technology to thoughtful accessory updates and hidden camera innovations, this year’s lineup feels like a carefully balanced step forward for both casual users and power enthusiasts alike.
Changes to the line up
Although it comes close, there's no perfect iPhone for everyone. This small device in your pocket can transform in to many things, because of it's sensors and applications. Before this year’s iPhone line-up you had to choose between a so called regular model or a so called pro model. This year we get another air model, which means we get the classic three options choice.
For those who aren't familiair, it's a strategy that makes it easier to choose for customers. Where one of the three options is disregarded quickly and then there's a simple binary choice, giving the customer the feeling of control over their pick.
To me the change in line up can be divided in to these categories. I would categorize the iPhone 17 as Everyday, the iPhone Air as Luxury and the iPhone 17 Pro as Utility. This frees up Apple to create hardware for its intended use, where it emphasizes on the categories without defining them. VP of Marketing Greg Joswiak casually tossed an iPhone Air during an interview to Lance Ulanoff for a live bend test, demonstrating that it doesn’t need to be treated like jewelry.
Now, diving in to the categories, I state the iPhone 17 as Everyday because of its appeal to most customers. It's the most affordable latest generation iPhone with so many great features for everyday use. It's also the iPhone where users probably will be upgrading from older models . On the iPhone 17 product page you get a compare drop down menu for certain features, comparing it to the iPhone 13, 14 and 15 series, but not iPhone 16.
But even for the year over year iPhone upgraders that go for the Everyday category the new features you get will make an everyday difference. From the new larger Always-On display with ProMotion and latest generation Ceramic Shield to the upgraded camera's, featuring a new Ultra Wide camera and more useful front camera utilizing an improved experience when taking Selfies and video's.
I've categorized the iPhone Air als luxury as its hardware appears expensive and high quality with its thin shiny borders and minimalistic aesthetic. It's the different looking and feeling iPhone in the line up and will attract customers who can relate to its beauty without sacrificing the everyday features they like to use. It will also attract the people that are closely watching technology and are curious as to what is technically possible. These people will probably be interested how it stacks up to their Pro use cases with the new Apple Silicon technology inside, it's really thin body, lack of a SIM card slot and bottom speaker. And of course its durability as I've mentioned before.
The iPhone 17 Pro falls in the category Utility. Giving you all the tools, sensors and technology necessary to get the most out of a pocket device, whatever situation you might find yourself in. No compromises whatsoever ever giving you many camera focal lengths for any moment that may arise, high performance possibilities with its vapor chamber cooling and a battery to support it. I can list up all the features, but that wouldn't be interesting to listen to and Apple's event keynote does a way better job at this. I'll link it in the show notes. Let me put it this way; it's all the must-haves in your pocket. The Pro models also changes up its colors so you don't have to give up features for appealing design with again, the three option choice. Do you go for color, a light shade or a dark shade. It's that simple.
What stands out to me
Apple also introduced a new Apple Watch line-up and the new AirPods Pro and I wanted to combine those with what stood out to me from the event as a whole.
The first is battery life, we got battery improvement for every product that was introduced compared to the previous model. Battery improvement for year-over-year models is really hard and so was really cool to see. Even without efficiency changes in chip hardware, like the S10 for Apple Watch and H2 for AirPods Pro. Is it simply because of bigger battery's? Or are there any software improvements? It surprised me enough to look into it once the products are out there.
The second one is upgraded display quality across the board. I've mentioned the next generation of Ceramic Shield already, giving us three times better scratch resistance. But also the display itself seems to be the same for all models this year. They all get crazy bright or super conveniently dark, they all have ProMotion technology for smooth animations and they all can be always-on, showing off the cool new lock screen options in iOS 26. From an aesthetic point, they are have super thin bezels for a modern, premium feeling.
The third observation that stood out to me after the announcement was how pleased people were with the improved Selfie camera. The camera now features a larger sensor that makes the front camera able to crop vertically or horizontally so you don't have to tilt your iPhone to get everyone in the picture. Your iPhone will now do this automatically when recognizing more people want to be in frame. And I can't stop but think this was not just because of the great feature. I think people were so pleased because it was the first time they heard it. You see, the part of the front camera updates wasn’t leaked or spread anywhere. People didn't see or read it before and couldn't think, talk or opinionate about it just yet. There were truly surprised ánd delighted, which is the reason why Apple is so secretive about these announcements. And you see how much more fun it is to be both surprised ánd delighted about a new cool feature or product.
The fourth and last observation was about wearing your iPhone. I think it’s great that Apple acknowledges how many people around the world are doing this. There is a very large third party market for cross body phone straps already, not just for iPhone. And it's cool to see Apple is offering a first party version of this with the quality and attention to detail that you expect of Apple accessories, because the ones I see out there may match your outfit but are mainly cheap materials and fabrics.
Wrapping up
As this podcast is focused on my daily and personal experiences with Apple products I will reserve any details regarding the actual use of the products for a future episode. I enjoyed watching the 75 minute keynote as Apple was leaning more into the core functionality of its latest line-up, keeping things swift and tight without fluff. The complementary video's were strong as ever hinting back at past sentiment and letting values like the Environment or Privacy speak for itself rather than layering on too thick. The lack of AI for the sake of AI was refreshing. And although I missed the classic ads where the products are used by someone which would make you jealous wanting to be that person, I think we will see more of the products in action in the coming weeks.
